Herringbone Double Crochet (HDC)

This stitch creates a unique textured fabric with a slight slant resembling the herringbone pattern. a variation of the traditional double crochet stitch but with a twist.

Step 1: Begin with a Foundation Chain. (Make a slip knot and crochet a foundation chain of the desired length. Ensure that the number of chains is a multiple of 2 plus 2 for your turning chain.)

Step 2: Yarn Over. (YO your hook.)

Step 3: Insert Hook. (Insert hook into 3rd chain from hook.)

Step 4: Yarn Over and Pull Up a Loop. (YO again and pull up a loop through the chain. You should have three loops on your hook.)

Step 5: Pull Through First Loop Only. (Instead of pulling through two loops as you would in a regular double crochet, pull the yarn through only the FIRST loop on your hook. You'll have two loops left on your hook.)

Step 6: Yarn Over and Pull Through Both Loops. (YO again and pull through both loops on your hook. This completes one herringbone double crochet stitch.)

Step 7: Repeat. (Steps 2 - 6 across the row until you reach the end.)

Step 8: Turning Chain. (When you reach the end of the row, chain two and turn your work.)

Step 9: Start the Next Row. (Start next row, but skip the first stitch (the turning chain) and insert your hook into the second stitch of the previous row. Then repeat steps 2 - 6 to crochet the herringbone double crochet stitch across the row.)

Step 10: Repeat. (Steps 8 - 9 for subsequent rows until you've reached your desired length.)
