Some objects are made to be admired from a distance, and others to be picked up, squeezed, and grinned at. Michelle Maclise works firmly in the second camp, tufting from a Pioneer Square studio a ferry ride from her home on Bainbridge Island, a small green island off Seattle. Drawing has followed her since childhood, and tufting finally gave those drawings dimension, weight, and a punchline, most famously in the form of a sardine pillow. Turn one over and there is an unexpected fabric waiting on the back.
