Even Moss Stitch

Even moss stitch, also known as linen stitch or granite stitch, is a textured crochet stitch pattern that creates a woven-like fabric with a subtle, nubby texture using Slip Stitch and Half Double crochet stitch only.

SHORT EXPLANATION

Always SL ST in SL ST. Always HDC in HDC
Step 1: Begin Foundation Chain
Step 2: Insert Hook
Step 3: Make Slip Stich (SL)
Step 4: Yarn Over
Step 5: Insert Hook
Step 6: Make Half Double Crochet (HDC)
Step 7: Repeat Step 2 - 6
Step 8: End 1 Slip Stitch in Final Chain
Step 9: Chain 1 and Turn
Step 10: Start Next Row

Even Moss in Half Double Crochet (HDC) 

For this Moss we use the Half Double Crochet. It's a simple stitch pattern that alternates between HDC and slip stitches (SL).

IMPORTANT: Always SL ST into a SL ST. Always HDC into a HDC

Step 1: Make Foundation Chain. (Start by making a slip knot and crocheting a foundation chain of the desired length.)

ROW 1

Step 2: Insert Hook. (Insert your crochet hook into second chain from the hook.)

Step 3: Make Slip Stich (SL). (Pull up a loop and pull through both loops.) 

Step 4: Yarn Over. (YO your hook.)

Step 5: Insert Hook. (In 3rd chain.)

Step 6: Make Half Double Crochet. (HDC - see explanation here.)

Step 7: Repeat. (Continue steps 2-6 in rest of chain ending with 1 slip stitch into final chain.)

Step 8: Chain One. (Make 1 chain and turn your work.)

ROW 2

Step 9: Insert Hook. (In 1st chain.)

Step 10: Make Slip Stich (SL). (Pull up a loop and pull through both loops.) 

Step 11: Yarn Over. (YO your hook.)

Step 12: Insert Hook. (In 3rd chain.)

Step 13: Make Half Double Crochet. (HDC - see explanation here.)

Step 14: Repeat. (Continue steps 9-13 in rest of chain ending with 1 slip stitch into final chain.)

Step 15: Chain One. (Make 1 chain and turn your work.)
