Brabble

Nobody is wrong. Nobody is backing down.

It starts innocently. Someone mentions they knit Continental. Someone else sets down their needles. Voices do not rise exactly, but they firm up. By the time wooden versus metal enters the conversation, there are sides.

There are always sides. The word for this is brabble: a loud, passionate argument about something that, from the outside, appears trivial. From the inside, it is anything but. It has been this way since the word first appeared in the sixteenth century. Makers have been brabbling since there were makers. It is what happens when people care about the same thing in completely different ways.

Which is to say, it is basically the entire history of craft.

"The brabble never ends. That's how you know everyone still cares."
