Waulking.

The cloth went in one thing. It came out another.

Waulking is the ancient practice of finishing handwoven wool by soaking it, then pounding and kneading it until the fibers lock together and the cloth becomes something it wasn't before. In the Scottish Highlands, it was done communally, with singing, because wet wool and repetitive labor are better with witnesses. What came out was denser, warmer, and more itself than what went in. There is a difference between a thing that is complete and a thing that is finished.

“Waulking knew this. Most of us are still figuring it out.”
